First Rob, then Cav,
then Leland, and now Torance have 4-digit career hit totals. Next up:
Minor, with 786 through 5/31/09.
SANTA CLARA, 5/31/09: There was practically no
question who would win this exhibition (which was played due to absence of
Cleveland Steamers captain Leland Yow; Sanchez Vs. Steamers returns next weeek)
once WBTY struck for 11 2nd-inning runs and basically went on cruise control as
Miceli's team could do nothing on offense.
With WBTY up 27-1 --- no misprint --- in the 6th,
the only "drama" that remained: Matsui reaching career hit #1,000 (he did so
with a 7th-inning automatic double), Andraesen trying for a cycle-completing
home run in the late innings (unsuccessfully), and V8 trying for a 2nd run to
take Davis off the hook (their lone run through the first 5 innings came when 1B
Davis forgot Bernal was catching and covered home, intercepting a throw there
that likely would have retired Miceli had it gone through) for spoiling the
shutout. V8 did score 8 more times over the 6th and 7th innings, two on a Yanez
home run and 3 on a scalding double by
Minor.
"Everything over my head
is covered!" --
Bush, playing buck, following a catch by CF Ridley in the 2nd.
AWARDS AND HIGHLIGHTS
Matsui did complete his 5th cycle of 2009, drove in 8 runs, and
played a great shortstop; he was rewarded with BAD ASS of the Day. Miceli may
have had a tough offensive day but he was not bad at 3rd save for a questionable
decision or two; Ridley named him Gold Glove. However, he and his team were
named Small Penis.
MORE NOTES
Ridley fell a triple short of the full cycle, ripping a 2-run
ITPHR in the 6th. Bernal added his 5th home run of '09 during the 11-run
2nd.
V8 finished with a meager 22 hits, just 2 from Manning in 8
AB.
Rob Flores missed his first of what will be many games of
2009, leaving Yanez, Bush, Matsui, Bernal and Davis as the lone remaining
Iron Men.
Soonam Chowdhury paid a visit after the game, stating he
could be recovered from his off-field finger injury in time for next week's
series game. JD
