PETER J. GILL MEMORIAL PARK -- MILPITAS

LOCATED: Near intersection of Calaveras/Hillview in Milpitas.

DIMENSIONS: 280, 300, 290

FENCE: Chain-link; Silver Monster in left.

DANGER FACTOR: 3½/5. Silver Monster fairly easy to clear; playground on opposite side. Paseo Refugio runs parallel to LF line, and cars are vulnerable to fouls especially at home run distance.

BOOT FACTOR: 2½/5. Some softball practice here; usually vacated around noon. Recently has been occupied by cricket players.

LAST USED: February 19, 2006

This field is rarely the league's first choice, but it's a fine backup field--if you can wait til noon when the girls finish practice. Gill has a rocky, but playable dirt infield and bleachers for fans/players to stretch out. Its' most distinctive feature is the high LF wall in left which safeguards a playground on the other side. It has nice high dugouts for taller players. Early on in Gill's use, bench players would guard the playground from potential homers, but not many have cleared the wall, and eventually the guarding stopped. Beyond right field are tennis courts which have never been reached. There is an open grass area along the 1B dugout in foul ground that is sometimes frequented by dog-walkers, football-tossers, etc.

Gill hasn't been used since early '06, as cricket players overran it.

IT HAPPENED HERE:
  • Dirty Sanchez win Game 7 against the Cleveland Steamers (2005)

The open space behind the 1B dugout is frequented by citizens doing a variety of activities

Paseo Refugio runs close to the 3B side of the field--dangerously close at home run distance

A spectacular view is available beyond the RF fence.

The Silver Monster protects kids on the playground from home run balls.
