This softball diamond is a lefty hitters haven. With plugs for installable bases and a good dirt infield (especially the batters' boxes), it can remind some of Taylor...until you reach the grass. The green here, while not in the class of Lincoln High, isn't the best kept and there are several dry patches. Plus, the outfield is hilly (and spacious; homers to LF can roll forever through the mini-forest), and right field is cut off several yards from the standard fence "line" by a basketball court. Said court was determined to be in play and if it were reached in the air, the batter would be rewarded with a home run (Cav and Joel took advantage of this). There are also metal bleachers a la Gill, and the park area is ripe with potential spectators.
For some reason, SJPD rolled by a number of times during the one game played here. It could have been a coincidence, but some felt it could have been to ensure no hardball is being played at Hathaway--the backstop overhang isn't all that large, and popups can reach Colombo drive. However, a dearth of tall trees in left field foul ground can and have proven helpful in protecting parked and passing cars. It remains to be seen how it figures into BAB's long range plans, but Hathaway certainly isn't shabby.
